Wataru “Wat” Misaka broke the “color” barrier in professional American basketball in 1946. (From the documentary Transcending: The Wat Misaka Story.)

Prejudice

Prejudice hurt me the most through its effect on my self-image and confidence. I was subjected to occasional verbal assaults from strangers and jokes from friends. Also growing up, the media really shaped the way I judged beauty, power, and success. The complete lack of representation of Asians in media led me to believe that Asians could not attain any of those attributes. The community I grew up in was also very white, which didn’t help me in my quest for an Asian role model. These things combined to give me a very negative self-image and low confidence that I am only now starting to reverse.
